Having initially visited Terezin in the Czech Republic (see the Terezin gallery) I followed the trail to the death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, where many of the Terezin prisoners were taken by train. Nothing can really prepare you for the scale of Birkenau. Photographing the camp was an upsetting and unnerving experience, particularly when shooting in the silence of early morning before the tour groups arrived. I hope that these images can at least convey the sadness of this terrible place.
